entre 1871 et 1890 Le Grand Canyon du Yellowstone Fonds de paysages américains (collection Robert Gérard) William Henry Jackson fut le photographe officiel pour le Service Géologique des Etats-Unis de 1870 à 1878. Sa documentation sur les Montagnes Rocheuses, et en particulier sur le Yellowstone en 1871, servirent à l'établissement du Yellowstone comme premier parc national en 1872.
